Abdim Stork

The Abdim’s stork (Ciconia abdimii) is also known as the White-Bellied stork. This bird is rarely seen in groups of less than ten birds. They are sometimes spotted in huge flocks of up to 10,000 individuals. The Abdim’s stork lives in Eastern Africa, from Ethiopia south to South Africa. Local Africans believe that this stork is a harbinger of rain and good luck. They are typically found near water – in open grasslands, pastures and savannah woodlands.

The Abdim’s Stork is among the smaller stork species but the average length is still 32 inches making it still a very large bird. The female will generally be slightly smaller than the male. The Abdim’s stork diet consists of a variety of animals including; small reptiles, amphibians, mice, crabs, eggs, locusts, caterpillar, and other large insects.
